Where has the money gone?

ImageA special mention must go to Steve Bellis, who aged 10 years in two minutes thanks to a prank played on him plotted by Doug Forbes and Steve Fowkes.

It was a cruel, rotten, vindictive, and heartless joke, so of course I was happy to assist.

For some reason £1000 of the £2500 top prize money went ‘missing’. Had he given the wrong envelope to another prize winner? Had he thrown the wrong envelope away? Had something a bit more sinister happed? Was the winner, Christian worried? (of course, not – he was in on it as well!).

Whilst Steve was busy panicking himself about the ‘missing’ prize money, he just couldn’t understand why photos were still being taken and seemed somewhat irritated that some muppet with his camera was busy snapping while he was busy panicking. Perhaps the look on his face was worth a picture, eh?

All in all, it was an extremely enjoyable day with some excellent poker being played.

Cypriot police raid exposes den of gambling grannies!

ImageTo the locals they are plucky super-grannies making the most of their twilight years. But the law being the law, police felt obliged to raid a private house in Cyprus after neighbours complained that pensioners were using a private house as a noisy gambling den.

A total of 42 elderly women were hauled off to a police station in the coastal town of Limassol after a police raid, which netted less than 100 in stake money.

Most of those arrested for playing poker and gin rummy were aged between 75 and 85. The oldest was five years short of her 100th birthday.

"They were charged and released", a police spokesman said. A date for their court appearance has yet to be set.

As well as the small bundle of notes and coins, police confiscated 830 playing cards and 536 poker chips.

Many Greek Cypriots are passionate card players, but it is a criminal offence to play for money, even in the privacy of one's home.

The state lottery, horse-racing and football betting shops – which are as common as pubs in Scotland – are the only legal forms of gambling in Cyprus.

Unregulated online gambling is also huge growth area, with Cypriots squandering an estimated 100 million a year on electronic bets.

Greek Cypriot gamblers are said to splash out a similar amount in the many casinos in the breakaway Turkish Cypriot north of the island.

The 42 women are unlikely to receive anything more than a small fine, if convicted. Any harsher penalty would appear unfair, given the many legal forms of gambling available, the advanced age of the accused and the paltry size of their bets.

Elderly women netted in previous gambling raids have claimed they were playing only for "social recreation", while the press criticised the police for wasting time chasing old ladies when they should be pursuing hardened criminals.

Politis, a leading daily, said yesterday: "The police raid was upsetting for these elderly women… They were only playing for small change which they hadn't given to their grandchildren to use on fruit machines."
